Fifth-generation Coloradoan Julian Cary has been performing since early childhood, making his debut jazz appearance at Dazzle at the age of fourteen. Since that first Dazzle performance, the 21-year-old vocalist and multi-instrumentalist has gone on to sell out five more shows there as a headliner, and in a variety of settings in the Denver Metro and Northern Colorado areas at venues such as Pepsi Center, First Bank Center, Larimer Lounge, Ace Gillett’s, the Moxi Theater, Walnut Room, and Crimson Room. In addition, he appeared in performances with artists such as Marylynn Gillaspie (Rare Silk), Greg Gisbert, Aubrey Logan, the New York Voices, and Bobby McFerrin. He has also been featured in 12-piece choruses in concerts by Ramin Djawadi (composer, Game of Thrones) and Hans Zimmer. Cary is a first-call vocalist around the state of Colorado for a wide variety of genres and projects. Among these are several live performances and album recordings by Cassio Vianna and Erik Applegate, one of which featured Ingrid Jensen. Starting in high school and well into his studies in Jazz Voice at the University of Northern Colorado, he has recorded several original compositions and arrangements. His most recent was a boundary-defying album of eight settings of poetry by American poet E.E. Cummings. 2014 was a fruitful year for Cary- he won his first of two consecutive YoungArts awards for solo jazz voice, and received local recognition for musical achievement by KDVR News on their “Colorado’s Best” segment. He was also awarded an honorable mention for the CU Boulder High School Composer’s Competition. Since then, he has won seven Downbeat awards in multiple categories including ensemble vocal jazz, and best original composition. At the University of Northern Colorado (where he received his Bachelor of Music degree in 2019), he was been a member of the multi-award-winning Vocal Jazz Ensemble, “Vocal Lab” for the past four years. He has been featured with big bands Lab I and Lab II for multiple concerts. Outside of jazz, he has given performances on solo Armenian Duduk performance, in early German and French Baroque music, choral singing (most notably, J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor, conducted by Simon Carrington), and as a soloist on several contemporary works by artists like Conner Shaw and Paul Elwood. In addition to studying performing, recording, writing, and playing bass, he has also been teaching private lessons since the age of eighteen to students of all ages and across multiple genres. In February 2019, he traveled to Thailand as a guest artist and educator at Silpakorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. For two weeks, he took the lead for all vocal jazz activities including private lessons, ensemble rehearsals. In addition, he presented two clinics, a highly-attended masterclass, and had multiple performances with the Sunny Trio, made up of Silpakorn’s jazz faculty members and Thailand’s premier jazz musicians. Now residing in Bangkok, he serves as an Instrucor of Jazz Voice at Silpakorn University, Faculty of Music and continues to perform in the area.
